5-step framework to test a new learning strategy: Lessons learned from Atlassian (2025)

This week, I attended a webinar hosted by Intellum. The guest speaker, Andrew DeBell, Sr. Learning Strategist at Atlassian, shares a framework they use to evaluate whether a learning strategy works. In their case, community-led learning, where content isn’t actively moderated by Atlassian but led my people in their user community, works in their favor.

Step 1. Observe

What organic behaviors are already happening in your community that could be amplified with support?

STEP 2. Hypothesize

Experiments must have clear goals tied to what matters most to your customers, team, and business.

STEP 3. Pilot

Test your hypothesis with minimal resources and complexity.

STEP 4. Iterate

Gather actionable data and make strategic adjustments along the way.

STEP 5. Scale or sunset

Don’t force it. Use your results to guide the next step.
